You may ask yourself how do colors, chakras, and food connect. Well let me break it down in a digestible way for you to be able to utilize this tool on a daily basis.
What are chakras: In Ayurveda, this term refers to wheels of energy throughout the body along the spine. All 7 chakras have bundles of nerves and major organs as well as psychological, emotional, and spiritual states of being. Since everything is moving, it’s essential that our systems stay open, aligned, and fluid. If there is a blockage then energy cannot flow.
1st Chakra Red / Root Chakra: Kundalini energy, instinct, survival, grounding and security.
2nd Chakra Orange/Sacral Chakra: emotions, sexual energy, and creativity.
3rd Chakra Yellow/Solar Plexus Chakra: mental functioning, power, control and freedom to be oneself.
4th Chakra Green/Heart Chakra: love, balance, and compassion.
5th Chakra Blue/Throat Chakra: speech and self-expression.
6th Chakra Indigo/Third Eye Chakra: clairvoyance, psychic abilities and imagination.
7th Chakra Violet/Crown Chakra: spiritual connection, understanding, knowing, bliss and oneness.
Follow the rainbow when eating: ROYGBIV.
As kids we grow up and learn about ROYGBIV. An acronym for the sequence of hues commonly described as making up a rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Now think of your food choices. Do you eat a variety of colors? How do colors and Chakras connect? Well, colors and Chakras are deeply connected; they follow each other like the colors of the rainbow. As the emotions of the body change, these colors also change.
What do the color pigments mean?
Red: Blood building, heart strengthening and volatile like a flame. Think of “Energy of fire/Chi”.
Orange: Anti-inflammatory. Think of “happiness in motion”.
Yellow: Tissue building/repair. Think of “happy”.
Green: Detox and neutralizers. Think of “liver cleanser”.
Blue: Imagination and creativity, nourishing stem cells/bone marrow. Aids with throat, thyroid, speaking your truth. Blue helps us manifest ideas and to express them. It is the most complex rare color pigment found on earth, Anthocyanins. Think of “expression”.
Purple= Nervous system protector, provides youthful skin, gut/nervous system protector and prevents bacterial infections. Think of “1st and 2nd brain”.
Brown= Digestion tract. It aids with peristalsis. Think of “flow”.
Black= Life force essence, Jing and antioxidants . It aids with bone marrow, kidney, and adrenals. Think of “longevity”.
White= Lungs and source energy. Think of “air”.
Colors and Foods:
Some of these foods are obvious, an orange is orange. Some are not so obvious, for instance leafy greens have yellow pigments inside. That is why when leafy greens break down the green pigment fades to reveal a yellow color underneath.
White: Daikon radish, white tea, cauliflower, parsnips, potato, jicama, garlic, onion, white pear and salt.
Black: Blackberries, black beans, black tea, black rice, black lentils, black soybeans and black pepper.
Brown: Mushrooms, dates, ginger and lentils.
Red: Peppers, cranberries, cherries, tomatoes, red potatoes, strawberries, raspberries, pomegranate and goji berry.
Orange: Peaches, oranges, mandarins, carrots, pumpkin, butternut squash, papaya, cantaloupe, apricots, sweet potatoes, guava, golden beets and turmeric.
Yellow: Capers, leafy greens have yellow pigment inside, banana, lemon, yellow carrots, yellow apple, pineapple, yellow pepper, corn and squash.
Green: Herbs, fennel, leek, spinach, kale, artichoke, broccoli, brussel sprouts, green tea, avocados and kiwi.
Blue: Blue berries, blue corn, blue corn flour and spirulina.
Indigo: Cabbage, rutabagas and turnips.
Violet: Purple onion, eggplant, purple carrots purple potatoes, elderberries, figs, purple asparagus, raisins, grapes, plums and prunes.
Nature never makes mistakes. So pay attention to the colors!
Indigenous people innately knew how food/color/pigments react and aid the body. Over the years humans became disconnected with food. We don’t grow our own food anymore. Mono-cropping, conventional foods, and processed foods confused us with what “real food” is.
Ultimately, do not let all this knowledge and science overwhelm you. Just listen to your body and be aware of how you feel. Are you craving blueberries and find your throat chakra is blocked? Are you finding yourself eating more greens than normal, your body maybe trying to detox? Do you have cardiac issues and reach for foods that are red? Being mindful and aware is the goal. Having meals that are well balanced with a variety of colors will taste and look beautiful, not to mention you will have some killer Instagram pictures. Keep an open mind and do not stress over it. Just know that the universe has your back and let energy flow.
